2010 Kiawah Art and House Tour

Six exceptional homes and art collections have been selected to provide a variety of experiences:

Ø   Deep within the gated community of “Cassique,” stands this unique hand-thrown-stucco-with-tabby home. It was inspired by the architecture of the British Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Nestled within ancient live oaks, it affords a panoramic view of the tidal marsh, golf course, and the property’s own formal, terraced gardens. The home’s interior brims with specially crafted stonework, decorative ironwork, and the owners eclectic art and antique collection~ from the 19th century to the present. Ø    Strategically positioned between five large live oak trees, and overlooking the dunes and grasses of the River Course, this shingle style home in the “Settlement” showcases the owners’ extensive collections of period Georgian and Swedish Gustavian antique furniture, as well as multiple displays of 18th century paintings and botanical prints, including those of Mark Catesby. American folk art is represented in a fine collection of antique duck decoys; also of note are handcrafted porcelain and tole flowers by Vladimir Kanevsky.  Please click here to view house #2.

Ø     The natural environment of Kiawah’s “Preserve” neighborhood is the ideal setting for a home designed and built to be energy efficient. Constructed of insulated concrete form, and placed on the site to take full advantage of a southern exposure, overlooking Blue Heron Pond, energy use is reduced by 50%. All the building materials were acquired locally, and the interior walls, of natural earth plaster, dramatize the owners’ vivid art from the American Southwest, Haiti, and Asia~ particularly Vietnam. Use of color creates coherence and serenity, overall.   Please click here to view house #3.

Ø     Commanding an important presence on the Atlantic Ocean, this European-inspired stucco home with inverted floor plan provides dramatic views of the ocean, as well as of Bass Creek. The owner’s French background, and expertise in antiques and art are reflected in the home’s interior. Exquisite painted and gilt furniture, bronzes, porcelains, sculpture, glassware, and interesting paintings abound. A beautiful pool, between the house and the ocean, creates a subtle, double-water view. Please click here to view house #4.

Ø      Located in the secluded Summer Islands enclave, this elegant yet casual shingle style house’s form and massing integrate it with the site, while the layout offers spectacular views of Bass Creek. The interior and exterior spaces seamlessly flow together and are well adapted for entertaining large groups, yet maintain a cozy atmosphere for immediate family. The interior design is a subtle backdrop for selected European antiques and the artwork of noted North Carolina artist, Michael Barringer.  Please click here to view house #5.

Ø     With serene porches and pool overlooking meandering Cinder Creek, this engaging home brings the outdoors inside with plentiful windows and natural color scheme. Throughout the elegantly designed and crafted interior, the owners’ art collection from Connecticut and from South Carolina, adds depth and richness. Traditional, but with an edge, this home is landscaped appropriately for the lushness of it’s Preserve location Please click here to view house #6.
